Abstract

592,611. Automatic firearms. LIPPERT, H., and MUHLEMANN, E. June 29, 1945, No. 16656. [Class 92 (ii)] The breech-block of an automatic firearm consists of two relatively movable parts 3, 4, the front part 3 of which carries a rotatable locking bolt 11 having machined ends 31, 32, Fig. 9, engaging in a groove 33 in the breech casing, and having gear teeth 20 which mesh with a rack 18 rigidly connected to the part 4 and carrying the striker. In operation, when the breech-block is urged forwardly by a spring 5, the front part 3 of the breech-block eventually strikes the cartridge chamber and at this stage the part 4 moves forwardly relatively to the part 3, thus rotating the bolt into a locking position in which its ends engage the wall of a hole 34 at the end of groove 33, and at the same time effecting firing by means of the striker on the rack 18. On firing, the barrel 1 and breech casing recoil against the action of a spring, carrying with them a toggle-lever device 38, 42, which by engaging with a fixed cam on the gun mounting imparts an accelerating movement to the rear part 4 of the breechblock. Such movement causes relative movements of the parts 3, 4, thus rotating the bolt 11 to the unlocking position and causing the breech-block to move rearwards against the action of the spring 5. The relative movement is limited by shoulders 15, 17, one on each part 3, 4, the two parts being inserted into each other by a bayonet joint action. The two parts are constantly urged towards one another by a spring-controlled T-shaped member in the forwardly extending base of the part 4, this member having a pin 27 extending into the part 3. The part 3 carries an extractor 21 and a stripper 36 for extracting cartridges from a belt or a magazine. In a modification, the invention is applied to a gas-operated gun. Specification 575,515 is referred to.
