Abstract
591,890. Abrasive band apparatus for finishing turbine blades. JAMESON, Ltd., J. L., and JAMESON, J. L. May 17, 1945, No. 12450. [Class 60] The curved surface of turbine or like blades is finished by the method which consists in presenting the surface to abrasive on a flexible carrier, where that carrier is backed by a rigid die surface preformed to correspond in shape and in extent to the shape and extent to which the curved surface of the blade is to be finished, and in causing relative movement between the blade and die surface on the one hand, and the carrier on the other hand. A flexible endless abrasive-coated band 4 passes over a shaped face 2 of a former block 1, under jockey pulleys 5, 6, and around return pulleys 7, 8, one of which latter is driven. A turbine blade 3 is damped to a frame 11, pivoted at 12, which swings down to bring the surface 3<1> of the blade on to the band, where it passes over the former surface 2. A device may be included to start a flow of lubricant to the abrasive surface when the blade holder is brought into position. The band may traverse across the former surface during operation.
