Abstract

591,875. Plate heat-exchangers; smoke-tube boilers. HOARE, Ltd., J., and HOARE, W. J. March 7, 1945, No. 5689. [Classes 64 (iii) and 123 (ii)] A heat-exchanger, such as an economizer, or a smoke-tube boiler as shown, is built up of a plurality of vertically disposed hollow sections a which are preferably assembled to form two units, one on each side of a central space g serving as a hopper for delivery of coal to a pair of fireboxes h, and are connected to upper and lower side water headers e by junctions f. Primary air is supplied to below the fireboxes by a fan j; a supply of secondary air over the whole length of the fuel bed may also be provided. The sections in both units are arranged one behind another, and each section has rows of horizontally-extending and projecting tubes b which, when the sections are assembled, form continuous gas passages as well as define spaces or vertical flues between adjacent sections. The sections are also provided with cut-away portions m, the arrangement being such that the combustion gases will flow upwardly between the sections and around the tubes b to the duct constituted by the said cut-away portions m, thence through this duct to the front of the boiler, and finally back through the tubes b to the rear outlet duct k.
