591,770. Moulds for plastics, platens &c. OGDEN, J. May 6, 1944. No. 8611. Convention date, Aug. 21, 1943. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] Bodies having passages for heating or cooling fluid such as steam heated platens, cylindrical moulds for plastics &c., are made from metal plates or strips welded together at bevelled edges, the passages being formed by machining channels at one or both of the adjacent edges of each joint and holes drilled to connect the passages. A platen is formed from plates 10 with bevelled edges 12 for receiving weld metal, and strips 11 bevelled on the edges adjacent the plates. Some of the plates 10 and the strips are formed with channels 13 at their edges to provide steam passages which are closed at their ends by weld metal or screwed plugs 15 or connected to service lugs 16 welded to the strips 11. Cross passages 14 are formed by drilling holes at right angles to the channels. A mould may be formed from annular sections 17 with bevelled edges welded together and with passages formed by channelled edges. Cross passages 20 are provided two of which are connected to service ports in lugs 21 welded to the sections. Such a cylindrical body may alternatively be formed from longitudinal arcuate strips 22, welded together and formed at their edges with channels to form longitudinal passages or from two helically wound strips 27 welded to each other at their edges formed with channels to provide a helical passage.
