Abstract
1,187,865. Continuous casting. SCHLOEMANN A.G. 6 Oct., 1967 [10 Oct., 1966], No. 46915/67. Heading B3F. [Also in Division F2] To reduce breakage due to heat cracks 7, helical or part-helical recesses 3 at least 3À5 mm. deep and of rounded cross-section are provided in the cylindrical surfaces 5 of rollers which guide and move a continuous casting. There may be a single groove 3<SP>1</SP> with rounded edges 8, or several grooves in a multi-start arrangement or discontinuous grooves. Rung-like grooves (9) may interconnect adjacent grooveruns. Annular plates 11, Fig. 7, each in the form of two helical half-loops joined at their ends, may be welded to a roller surface to form between them discrete recesses 3 of a similar form. The spaces 5 between the recesses 3 are 7/3 to 3 times as wide as the recesses, which are said to shift a line 6 of surface stress to below the cracks 7. The roller may be a hollow shell 1 mounted on a spindle.
