Abstract

629,385. Hollow rollers. LUKENS STEEL CO. July 18, 1947, No. 19219. Convention date, Oct. 16, 1945. [Class 34(i)] [Also in Group XXII] A hollow roller which has passages in its periphery for heating fluid is constructed by sandwiching a slotted metal plate between other plates, fusion welding the pack to form a resultant single plate having internal passages and curving the resultant plate into a cylinder, the abutting edges being welded together. In the construction shown, a plate 10 has formed therein a longitudinal series of zig-zag slots 11, each of which terminates at one end of a longitudinal edge of the plate and has its opposite end near the opposite end of the plate, the runs 12 of adjacent slot interdigitating with each other. This plate is sandwiched between two plates 13, 14 which become the inner and outer walls of the cylinder. The inner wall 13 is drilled to produce radial openings communicating with the inlet and outlet ends of each passage, bosses 18 being welded about these holes to receive fluid distribution pipes 25 which connect with trunnions 21 through axial port 23 and radial ports 24, the cylinder being mounted on end spiders 19 and central spider 20 which are fixed to the trunnions 21.
