Abstract
A machinable electric insulating composition comprises a finely-divided crystalline material having a high dielectric constant and consisting of titania and/or a titanate, mixed with a finely divided mineral capable of imparting machinable properties, e.g., mica or asbestos, and a bond consisting of a glass frit which softens below the temperature of dissociation of mica. Water or a solution of water glass may be used as a temporary binder; alternatively no binder may be used and the ingredients packed in a mould and heated as rapidly as possible to a temperature of 1100-1400 DEG F. to soften the glass. The frit may be a sodium-potassium or lead borate. If the product is relatively porous, it may be impregnated with a wax or other water-repellent substance of high insulating value. The titanium compound may amount to 75 per cent. of the composition, but the proportions are normally 10-60 per cent. titanium compound, 10-50 per cent. mica, and 30-40 per cent. frit, with water from 8-12 per cent. of the mixture. After moulding, the composition is cooled slowly, the outer skin is ground off, and the formed material is then cut and machined as required.
