Abstract
591,216. Energy-storing brakes. BONE, K. S. C. May 31, 1946, No. 11264/45. [Class 103 (ii)] In a device for retarding the motion of a motor vehicle by storing its kinetic energy in springs and subsequently using it for accelarating the vehicle, the back axle is provided, on each side of the differential, with the energystoring device shown. Bevel wheels d, e are rotatably mounted on the axle b and are each provided with clutch teeth d<1>, e' adapted to engage with corresponding teeth on clutch discs f, g, splined to the axle. Planet wheels h, i are carried by spring arbors h<1>, i<1> carrying spiral springs j, k, the outer ends of which are coupled to plungers m, n, whereby coiling of the spring exerts compression on spring o or p. Clutches f, g are. operated by levers r, s connected by slotted members r', s' and link t to the strap of an eccentric, the eccentric being turned by gearing actuated by the foot brake pedal. When the pedal is fully depressed, clutch f is engaged, and energy is absorbed in the springs. When the pedal is released, clutch f is released, and clutch g is engaged, whereby energy is returned from the springs to the axle b. Clutch g is released only when the pedal is fully released.
