Abstract

A plurality of sheets of flexible fibrous manufactured material is coated or impregnated with a composition containing one or more liquids having one or more CH2=C< groups, then moved past a roller to distribute the composition uniformly and then passed through a polymerizing zone while holding the assembly so that the sheets run parallel to one another until polymerization is completed at a temperature below the boiling point at the pressure under which the polymerization is effected, of any constituent of the composition. Monomers specified are: methyl methacrylate, methyl alpha chloracrylate, vinyl acetate and styrene; maleic anhydride and esters of maleic and fumaric acid with a dibasic alcohol may be added. Polymers may be added to the monomeric composition, also colouring matter and plasticizers. Catalysts such as benzoyl or lauryl peroxides, N-nitroso-acrylacyl amines, N-nitroso-acetanilide or N-nitroso-benzanilide may be present. The polymerization may be carried out in two steps, the final step using the higher temperature. Specifications 581,251 and 588,660 are referred to.
