Abstract
590,670. Flexible shafts. FLETCHER, R. W. J. Feb. 27, 1945, No. 4917. [Class 80 (ii)] In a flexible shaft of the kind comprising concentric wire or strip helices adapted to rotate together, with or without a central core, one or more of the elements do not transmit torque but serve only to reduce the tendency of the shaft to buckle under load. As shown, an outer element 2 secured by soldering, brazing, swaging or other means to a driving terminal 5 revolves within a stationary flexible casing 6 and transmits the driving torque, whilst an inner element 1 is free from the terminal 5 and axially spaced therefrom to prevent flexure jamming. Alternatively, the outer element may be free and the inner torque-transmitting or inner and outer free elements may enclose a torque-transmitting element. Where a central core is used, this may be either torque-transmitting or free, and may consist of one or more wire rods or, according to the Provisional Specification rubber or rubber and wire structures. Lubrication between the various element may be provided. Specification 549,874 is referred to.
