Abstract

To protect metals and alloys during heat treatment under conditions liable to result in oxidation, scaling and/or other deterioration of the surface of the metals &c. such as decarburisation, a protective agent consisting of one or more of the alkaline earth hydrides, magnesium hydride or one or more of the hydrides of the alkali metals other than lithium is arranged adjacent to, or in the vicinity of the metal &c. during heating. The protective agent may be packed round the metal &c. and the whole enclosed in a sealed container or the agent may be placed in a separate receptacle secured to the inner wall of the container or separated from the metal &c. by an interposed layer of wire gauze or other suitable pervious material. The agent may be used in the form of a finely divided or granular mass and may be mixed with an inert filler such as aluminium oxide or lime.
