Abstract

To protect metals and alloys during heat-treatment under conditions liable to result in oxidation, scaling and/or other deterioration of the surface of the metal such as decarburization, a protective agent consisting of one or more alkaline earth metals, magnesium or one or more of the alkali metals (other than lithium) is arranged adjacent to or in the vicinity of the metal or alloy during the heating. The metal may be enclosed in a sealed container with the protective agent packed round it or the agent may be placed in a separate receptacle secured to the inner wall of the container or separated from the metal &c. by an interposed layer of wire gauze or other suitable pervious material. The agent may be used in the form of a granular or finely divided mass and may be mixed with an inert filler such as aluminium oxide or lime. The agent may comprise two or more of the metals referred to above alloyed with one other such as a 60/40 or 85/15 magnesium calcium alloy or one of the protective metals alloyed with a cheaper metal such as a 60/40 copper calcium alloy. In an example, rods of a copper nickel manganese alloy are packed in steel containers with a quantity of 60/40 calcium alloy in the form of granules passing a 1/8 inch sieve and precipitation-hardened by heating at 400-500 DEG C. for periods up to 8 days.
