Abstract

588,738. Electrically tripped switches. LANDIS & GYR SOC. ANON. Jan. 25, 1945, No. 2045. Convention date, Dec. 27, 1943. [Class 38 (v)] A switch with an actuating magnet opens on overload by quick-acting release of the normally fixed contact and is re-set by a push button, which becomes inoperative as the switch closes. The switch has a moving contact 2 biassed open by a spring 10 and closed by a remote-controlled magnet 8 actuating an armature 7 and including a switch 11 in its energizing circuit. On de-energization of the magnet 8, the contact 2 moves to the "open" position. On overload a magnet 6 attracts an armature 5, releasing a lock 4, 3 and allowing a spring 1a to withdraw the normally fixed contact 1. The contact 1 strikes a lever 26 normally latching a lever 15 at 27, and levers 26, 15 rotate clockwise on spindles 25, 16, thus opening the switch 11 to de-energize the magnet 8 and causing a re-set button 12 to project through the wall 46 of the switch. The switch is switched-in again by pressing the button 12, whereby a projection 21 on a lever 19 pivoted at 17 to the lever 15 re-sets the contact 1 and thus permits the lever 26 to re-close the switch 11 and re-latch the lever 15. As the armature 7 moves to re-close contact 2, a projection 24 strikes the lever 19 out of engagement with the contact 1, rendering the switch trip-free. On excess temperature, a temperature-responsive bimetal strip 33 unlocks a latch 34, 39, releasing levers 42, 26, 15 so that the switch 11 opens and de-energizes the magnet 8. The lock 34, 39 is also re-set, in trip-free manner, by pressing the button 12. The parts 1, 2, 19 are duplicated for the second pole of a two-pole switch, a common member 18 carrying both levers 19, only one of which is provided with an arm 23. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the switch is arranged for trip-free action by coupling the button 12 to the lever 15 through an over-set toggle, which is broken by an abutment on the armature 7 when the switch closes. Specification 588,724 is referred to.
