Abstract

1442436 Automatic circuit breakers; releasing devices FEDERAL PACIFIC ELECTRIC CO 3 Sept 1973 [15 Sept 1972] 41262/73 Heading H1N A circuit breaker having a movable contact 10 on an arm 12 fixedly pivoted at 22 and acted on by a toggle linkage mechanism 28, 26, 18 through a movable coil spring pivot 20 is latched against a push-off spring 32 which snaps overcentre so that an end part 18a of the actuator 18 presses against the end of a bimetal 16 and the breaker is closed. On normal overcurrent the bimetal 16 is deflected downwards by thermal expansion and on heavy overcurrent it is attracted magnetically towards a soft magnetic pole 44 to release the latch and cause the breaker to open. Auxiliary release means are provided which is operable in response to an external signal derived from a current transformer 54, Fig. 1, which energizes an electromagnetic solenoid 56 having an armature 58 carrying an arm 62 which are all disposed in a cavity of the circuit breaker casing, Fig. 4, and are completely clear of the operational travel paths of the latching and release means previously referred to. When the auxiliary release means is energized the arm 62 acts upwardly to strike the end part 18a of the actuator 18 in an endwise manner, Fig. 3, and to enable the same latch to be released the actuator 18 is formed in two parts 18a, 18b, the former being slidable upon the latter and being normally biased to its latching position by a spring 18h.
