Abstract

Lead phthalates are made by reacting phthalic acid or anhydride with lead monoxide in the presence of water. A solution of phthalic acid or anhydride may be added to a hot suspension of lead monoxide in water at a rate slightly slower than the reaction rate. A temperature range of between 15 DEG and 100 DEG C. and preferably 75 DEG to 95 DEG C. is used. When the pH of the reaction mixture drops from 9.2 to 8.5, dibasic lead phthalate hemihydrate, 2PbOC6H4(COO)2Pb 1/2 H2O, is separable; a further drop to 6.5 indicates the formation of monobasic lead phthalate, PbOC6H4 (COO)2Pb and a further drop to 5.1 indicates normal lead phthalate, C6H4(COO)2Pb. The basic phthalates are suitable for use as pigments. A catalyst such as nitric or formic acid may be used if desired in amounts between 0.10 and 0.15 pounds per 100 pounds of lead monoxide.
