Abstract

588,281. Coating metals. WORTHINGTON, W. Feb. 7, 1945, No. 3135. [Class 82 (ii)] In a method of coating metal with a protective metal, the metal to be coated is heated to the melting point of the coating metal, immersed while hot in a molten bath of the coating metal and, after removal from the bath, is subjected to a blast of fluid under pressure to strip excess coating metal therefrom and spread the coating. As shown, a strip of metal 10 after being fed through a heating unit 6, a flux bath 7 and a bath 14 of molten metal, is subjected to a blast of fluid from two nozzles 40 directed downwardly and inwardly towards the strip, and finally is fed through a cooling unit 9. The heating and cooling units 6 and 9 may each be formed of two separate units of tubular elements 26, one on either side of the strip, arranged so that the heating or cooling medium passes in a sinuous course through each element in turn. Hot or cold gas may be circulated through the respective units in order to maintain an even temperature in each zone. The fluid projected from the nozzles 40 may be a gas or may be a liquid, as for example the protective liquid 16 on the surface of the bath. The thickness of the coating may be adjusted by changing the angle of incidence of the fluid from the nozzles, varying the fluid pressure delivered to the nozzles, varying the speed of the strip or varying the temperature of the fluid delivered to the nozzles, or a combination of these.
