Abstract

587,698. Moulding by extrusion. WALKER, L. Nov. 28, 1944, No. 23685. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group II] Plastic material is prepared by introducing relatively dry granular material in scattered form into a zone of reduced pressure and simultaneously spraying liquid into the zone in predetermined amounts in relation to the amount of granular material. The granular material and the liquid may be introduced intermittently into the zone, wherein the pressure may be in the neighbourhood of 2 1bs. per square inch absolute. Apparatus comprises a chamber 1 connected to a vacuum pump 11 through a washer 13 and a filter 16. Granular material is admitted through a rotary valve 3 with pockets 4 driven by a gearing 5. The latter also drives a cam 9 which operates a poppet valve 7 to admit a spray of liquid through a nozzle 6. Pressure is applied to the mixture by mixing arms 23 on a rotary shaft 20, which also carries curved arms 19 to propel the material through an outlet 18. The latter is sealed at the commencement of the mixing with a plug of the plastic mixture, in order to maintain a reduced pressure in the chamber 1. In a modified apparatus the arms 19, 23 are replaced either by a pair of pressure rolls or by an extrusion screw. Air may be admitted through the inlet valve for the granular material, at each delivery of the latter, to apply an increased pressure to assist in the mixing of the materials already delivered to the vacuum chamber.
