Abstract

587,253. Treating and printing fabrics. UNDERHILL, L. C., UNDERHILL, D., and HARRISON, E. J. Nov. 2, 1944, Nos. 21512/44 and 4404/45. [Class 100 (ii)] In a method of treating and printing textile sheets wherein each sheet is stiffened before printing, each sheet is treated with a water-soluble binding material in solution, dried and printed, and, in the case where a pliable sheet is desired the sheet is washed after printing, or, where a sheet is required for use in the open, such as a map, the sheet is dried and treated with an insolubilizing agent before printing. In a modification, a textile web has its marginal portions and equally spaced transverse bands thereof treated with a liquid that on setting or drying stiffens the treated portions, the web is severed after drying to provide sheets each of which is stiffened around its margin, and the sheets are then printed. The liquid may be a solution of a cellulose ester in an organic solvent such as amyl acetate and may contain a plasticiser and a filler. The margins and equal spaced transverse portions of a web may be treated with this liquid, the web dried and cut into sheets which can then be printed, and the stiff margins may then be cut off to give a limp sheet. A sheet may be impregnated with a water-soluble solution containing starch or dextrine which could be removed by washing after printing. Where the sheet is to be used as a map, a solution of gelatine or glue, together with zinc white or titanium, may be used, and the insolubilizing agent may be chrome alum and citric acid ; or the sheet may be treated with a solution of casein in water to which china clay is added and formaldehyde is applied as the insolubilizing agent. Specification 431,218 is referred to.
