Abstract

587,047. Joining structural members. BRODERICK, A. H. T. Oct. 23, 1944, No. 20514. [Class 20 (ii)] A frame member suitable for building comprises a channel a having inturned flanges c and a connecting member e, of such shape and dimensions that, when the members are parallel, it fits in the frame member a, and also the member e is provided with slots g, so that when arranged at an angle, e.g., a right angle, to the member a the flanges c engage in the slots g. The connecting member e comprises a channel member having bent over flanges k, l and the sides of the channel are adapted to be sprung inwards to move the member e along the member a. The parts are locked in position by the engagement of the parts h' of the member e with slots d in the flanges c and by bending over a part n of the flange and thus preventing the sides of the member e being sprung inwards. A wedge, block or distance piece, may be used to prevent the sides being sprung inwards. A second frame member may be placed over the connecting member e and connected thereto by bolts &c. through holes o. The connecting member e may be used to connect two frame members end to end. The bolt holes in the frame members and connecting members may be of different pitch to give a vernier effect. The connecting member e may be mounted as in Fig. 1, but at the end of a frame member a and be bolted to the side of a second frame member to give a butt joint between the frame members. A frame member may be suspended from a beam by means of a bendable member bent round the slot d and over the beam. Slabs are connected to the frame by self-tapping screws, clips, bolts &c. or cover strips which may have key-hole slot connections with the frames. According to the Provisional Specification, the flanges l are bent outwardly.
