Abstract
586,959. Moulding abrasive tools. ABBEY, A. (American Optical Co., and Neveroil Bearing Co.). Jan. 10, 1944, No. 7990/46. Divided out of 578,200. [Classes 70 and 87 (ii)] [Also in Groups II and XXIII] An abrading tool comprises abrasive such as crushed diamonds, sapphires, corundum &c., dispersed throughout a sintered mixture of approximately 40-50 per cent. nickel, 30-45 per cent. copper, and 10-20 per cent.. tin. As shown, a tool for grinding lenses comprises an abrading portion 11, Fig. II backed by a sintered metal portion 14 bonded to a support'18 having a spindle socket 17. In forming the tool, particles of metal 26, Fig. IV are compressed in a space between a central member 25 and sleeve 23 by a plunger 27 under a pressure of 17 tons per sq. in., the plunger having a face 28 corresponding with the interface 13 between the portions 11 and 14. A mixture of abrasive and metal particles is then placed on top of the compressed metal 26, which may be dusted with copper, and another plunger, having the desired shape of end surface, compresses the mixture under a pressure of 35 tons per sq. in. The compressed assembly is then heated to 1,600-1,925‹F. for 60-80 minutes in a neutral atmosphere, and bonded to the support 18.
