Abstract
Olefines which are mixed with saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons are hydrated by treating in the liquid phase with a mineral acid of hydrating strength in a counter-current manner in a series of alternate emulsification and decantation zones, an inert gas being used to effect the emulsification and also movement through the said zones. At one end of the battery the saturated hydrocarbons are obtained, at the other the hydrating solution saturated with the olefines, which is hydrolysed to give the alcohol. The alcohol is removed from the acid by scrubbing with a hot inert gas, and the acid is concentrated for re-use by heating it. In the example, a propanepropylene mixture is treated with sulphuric acid as indicated above giving pure isopropyl alcohol and propane. Specifications 511,247 and 586,829 are referred to.
