[A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Nov. 21, 1944.] [Class 137] A ventilation plant having a plurality of inlet and outlet valves connected to a system of air passages is characterized by the provision of a baffle arrangement having a resistance to flow so adapted in relation to the desired quantity of air flowing per unit of time that the difference between the external and internal air pressure amounts to at least 5 mm. water column and preferably lies between 7 and 10 mm. In one form shown in Fig. 1, a baffle inserted adjacent to a valve in an air passage comprises two walls 2 and 3 within a rectangular or circular sheet metal drum 1. The walls, preferably of a ceramic or earthenware material, are formed with longitudinal holes 4 and 5 of which the holes 5 are of larger diameter than the holes 4. The flanges 6 and 7 on the walls space them apart and from the mouth of the drum which is covered by a perforated plate 8. The plate 8 may be omitted and the walls arranged with their flanges facing inwards. Several other baffle arrangements are described such as a plurality of slotted plates placed one behind the other; a plurality of plates having perforations in the form of conical nozzles tapering in the direction of the air flow ; a plurality of plates arranged in a staggered fashion to form a zigzag passage for the air flow, and two plates provided with tubular nozzles the tubes of the first plate overlapping the tubes of the second plate so that the air flow has not a direct path. An cutlet valve arrangement shown in Fig. 6 comprises inner and outer valve plates 16 and 17 arranged on a screw spindle 19 threaded into a spider 18 and controlling inner and outer openings 20 and 21.
