Abstract

586,325. Work - holders. M-O VALVE CO., Ltd., and SOWTER, A. B. June 30, 1944, No. 12533. [Classes 83 (iii) and 83 (iv)] Soldering.-A jig for use in clamping two or more elements to a body along axes lying transversely to each other during joining by heat treatment, comprises a cradle shaped to accommodate the body, first clamping means reacting on the cradle and imposing on at least one of the elements a clamping force acting along a first axis to retain it in predetermined position against the body, and a second clamping means displaceable in the cradle and reacting on the body not through the cradle and imposing on at least one other element a clamping force acting along a second axis transverse to the first. The work may consist of a hollow copper body into sockets in which two pairs of hollow plug-shaped copper elements are joined by gold wire sealing material. The jig consists of a mild-steel cradle 1 mounted on trunnions 2 on supports 34 and formed with a cavity 3 on the middle of the top face shaped to receive the body 4 with appreciable clearance and having in its underfaoe an aperture 5, the two sides being formed from the middle to the top edges thereof with open-ended slots 16, 17. The first pair of elements 7, 6 with intermediate gold wire rings are inserted into the body respectively through the aperture 5 and in the mouth of the cavity and are held in position by plungers 14, 15 with part-spherical rear ends engaging conical seatings in bridge members 10, 11 which are mounted on upper and lower pairs of studs 8, 9 provided respectively with adjusting finger nuts 29 and nuts 32. The elements 18, 19 are placed with gold rings into the body through the slots and are held in place by similar plungers 27, 28 engaged by conical seatings in a pair of bridgepieces 23, 24 carried by a pair of bolts 20 passing as a loose sliding fit through bores 21 in the cradle and keyed thereto and adjusted at one end by finger nuts 30 and at the other end by nuts 31. In setting up, the bridge 10 is first lightly loaded by tightening the finger nuts 29, the body 4 being forced against the bottom of the cavity, whereupon the tie bolts 20 are lightly tightened by operating the finger nuts 30, so that collars 22 thereon react on the front of the cradle and the body made to bear on the front wall of the cavity. The nuts 31 are then fully tightened to clamp the plugs 18, 19, the gold rings being compressed and the body 4 thus moved rearwards out of contact with the, front wall of the cavity. The nuts 32 are then operated to clamp the elements 6, 7 and bring the body 4 clear of the bottom of the cavity so that it is unconstrained by the cradle during the final tightening, the plugs being thus free to take a proper bearing in their sockets.
