Abstract
586,317. Wave guides. COLLARD,J., and HILL, S. May 18, 1944, No. 9623. [Class 40 (v)] A wave guide, of the kind in which a longitudinal component of current flows only along certain portions of the surface of the guide and not along other portions of the surface, is provided with a coupling comprising a pair of flanges connected to the ends of adjacent sections, the flanges being in electrical contact with each other adjacent the portions of the guide where no longitudinal component of current flows and are arranged to be out of contact with each other adjacent the portions of the guide where a longitudinal flow of current occurs, the width of the flanges where they are spaced apart being such as to afford an effective short-circuit at the inner edges of said flanges. Figs. 1 and 3 show two sections 6, 7 of a rectangular wave guide having soldered to their ends coupling flanges 8, 9 which are bolted together so as to be in contact at raised bosses 10, 11 situated adjacent the shorter sides of the rectangular guide where no longitudinal current flows. The longer edges of the flanges are spaced apart slightly and have a depth of onequarter wavelength so as to present a shortcircuit at the inner edges where longitudinal currents flow. Alternatively, one coupling flange may be flat, the bosses being only on the other coupling, or both flanges may be flat, separation being effected by separate interposed conducting spacing elements. The side flanges may extend beyond the ends of the shorter sides of the guide.
