Abstract
Artificial filaments obtained by a dry spinning process from an alkaline solution of casein are subjected while in alkaline condition to a preliminary hardening treatment and then, after removing the alkali and without any intermediate stretching, they are hardened by treatment with a solution of a polyvalent metal salt which has been rendered partly basic by addition of alkali. The solution may also contain a salt such as sodium chloride or perchlorate which represses the swelling of the casein fibre. In an example, the hardening solution comprises 100 grams of ammonium iron alum, 1.3 grams of water-free sodium carbonate, and 30 grams of potassium perchlorate, per litre. The iron salt is rendered about 1/24 basic and the pH value is about 2. In another example, the solution comprises chrome alum, and sodium carbonate to render the chromium salt about 1/3 basic. In another example, the solution comprises ammonium alum, sodium carbonate, and sodium chloride. Gaseous formaldehyde may be used for the preliminary hardening. The spinning solution may contain 25 per cent or more of casein. Specification 570,572 is referred to.
