Abstract

585,965. Sheet metal joints. HYGIENIC WIRE WORKS, Ltd., DOWDALL, A. E., DOWDALL, J. T., and HAYCRAFT, P. E. Aug. 11, 1944, No. 15337. [Class 20 (ii)] A connecting device for joining two sheet metal strips 18, 19, end to end comprises a pair of flanged plates 21 having in their webs holes 24 of like size and shape, a cradle piece 22 having a base 30 and a projection 31 shaped to fit the holes 24, the projection being formed with a tapered keyway, and a wedge 23 to fit the keyway. The flanges 25, 26, of the plates 21 are welded or otherwise attached without screws to the plates 18, 19, and brought together with their holes in register. The projection 31 is then pushed through the holes and the wedge 23 driven into the keyway. A tongue 33 may be formed at the shallow end of the wedge and bent up after assembly to hold the parts in position. A strip 27 may be inserted between the plates 21, with a bead 29 to mask the joint.
