Abstract
<PICT:0585538/III/1> Minute spherical particles of inorganic gels are produced by emulsifying a hydrosol of the substance in a water-immiscible liquid, agitating until the gel is set, and separating the gel particles from the liquid. The constituents forming the hydrosol may be continuously supplied from tanks 1, 2 together with the immiscible liquid from tank 4 to an emulsifier 5, heater 7, and settling tank 8, and the gel particles are separated from the liquid (which may be either heavier or lighter than the hydrosol) in tower 10. After washing in 15 they are treated with an organic liquid, e.g., butyl alcohol or kerosene, in vessel 19. The resulting slurry passes through a rotary filter 22 and the cake is passed to a drier 29. The product consists of spherical particles 20-500 microns in diameter. The gel may consist of silica or a metallic oxide, e.g., of aluminium, iron, titanium; mixed gels, e.g., silica-alumina, silica-magnesia, silica-alumina-magnesia may also be prepared. They are particularly useful as catalysts employed in the fluidized state, e.g., for hydrocarbon conversions. Specification 576,058 is referred to.
