Abstract
In catalytic processes wherein the finely divided catalyst is circulated by means of a liquid or gas, it is employed in the form of preformed, spheroidal particles. Suitable catalytic materials are the oxides, sulphides and oxysulphides of iron, chromium, bismuth, boron, aluminium, gallium, copper, nickel, beryllium, titanium, indium, zirconium, thorium, cerium, scandium, vanadium, manganese, magnesium, silicon, lanthanum, germanium, tin, tantalum, molybdenum, and tungsten. To form the particles a hydrosol or dispersed gel is sprayed into a drying atmosphere, or a sol is dispersed in a liquid in which it is coagulated. In the illustrated modification the sol is sprayed into the hot exit gases of the regenerator. Silica and alumina sols produced respectively in vessels 134, 137 are mixed in 139 to produce a mixture of hydrous gels, which is washed and then mixed in 144 with a peptising agent and water. <PICT:0586945/III/1> The dispersion is pumped to a spray nozzle 149 in cyclone 157 traversed by the exit gases from the regenerator 112 of a regenerative fluid catalyst cracking plant of conventional construction. The gel particles produced are passed through pipe 153 to the regenerator and so into the catalyst circuit. Fines separated from the exit gases in subsequent cyclones or 160, 150 are mixed with the gel dispersion to be sprayed. Specification 576,058 is referred to.
