Abstract
<PICT:0644322/III/1> Microspheroidal inorganic hydrous oxide gels are made by preparing an aqueous slurry consisting of 3-6 per cent of the hydrous oxide gel in water containing soluble alkali metal salts, filtering the slurry and washing the filter cake, reforming a slurry of the filter cake in water to give a content of 3.5-8.8 per cent by weight of the gel, spraying the slurry into a current of hot gases at a temperature of at least 600 DEG F., and preferably up to 1200 DEG F., and maintaining the particles suspended in the gas stream while the free water of the slurry is evaporated. The slurries, preferably made by the process outlined in Fig. 1 (not shown), and disclosed in Specification 626,455, are passed into a shell 42 and pumped on to a revolving vaned wheel 44 from which small particles of gel are thrown into a cylinder and descend in a helical path caused by the swirling motion of hot gases introduced through ducts 36, 38, manifold 37, cone 39 and vanes 40. The gases containing the dried gel pass out of a conical bottom 32, having a lower detachable portion, into cyclone separators. Gels specified are those containing an oxide of Si, Fe, Al, V, Cu, Ni, Ti, Th, Mn, Cr, Zr or Mg or any two or more of these oxides. They may be used as catalysts, particularly in fluidized form, in cracking, dehydrating, hydrogenating, dehydrogenating or reduction processes or for synthesizing hydrocarbons or alcohols or they may be used as absorbents, e.g. for dehumidifying.
