Abstract

585,359. Pulse generating circuits. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. March 30, 1944, No. 5936. Convention date, Oct. 1, 1942. [Class 40 (v)] In a pulse-generating circuit, upon the flow of current through an inductor being interrupted, the energy in the inductor is transferred to a condenser which is suddenly discharged when the transfer of energy is complete, to generate a pulse in the load circuit. Upon the output of the square wave generator 23 going positive, valve 19 conducts causing current to flow through inductor 18. When the output of generator 23 reverses, the valve 19 is cut off, but current continues to flow in inductor 18 due to its self-inductance, thereby charging condenser 20 to a high positive voltage, the opposite plate being tied to earth through diode 26. The output of generator 23 is fed through delay circuit 24 so that gas-filled valve 21 is rendered conducting as the voltage on condenser 20 reaches its peak value, whereupon the condenser discharges through the magnetron 11 and valve 21. To avoid the accurate timing of firing of the valve 21, the valve is replaced by a saturable inductor, Fig. 5 (not shown), having high permeability at low flux density but easily saturated, thus presenting a high impedance at low current following rapidly with increase in current. A bias winding on the inductor fed from D.C. supply may be employed to adjust the point at which the impedance falls to a low value. To improve the pulse shape, Fig. 7 (not shown), the diode 26 may be shunted by a coil and given a small positive bias. U.S.A Specification 2,063,342 is referred to.
