Abstract
A refractory composition comprises a major quantity of zirconium dioxide which may contain up to 5 per cent. of other refractory materials with melting points above 2000 DEG F., and a water dispersible colloid, e.g., starch, dextrin, albumins, agar agar, gums, vegetable extracts &c. and a water soluble base forming a monohydroxyl base with water, e.g., alkali metal hydroxides, alkyl amines, oxonium compounds and piperidine both ranging from .002-.5 per cent. by weight of zirconium dioxide. Compositions are made for slip casting or jiggering by adding water, e.g., 8-17 per cent. of the zirconium dioxide and these are cast in plaster moulds, dried and fired. According to examples finely ground electrically fused zirconium dioxide is mixed with sodium hydroxide, tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide or piperidine, tannin, dextrine or corn starch and water Specifications 544,628 and 578,409 are referred to.
