Abstract

584,322. Washing bottles, bulbs &c. JESSEL, R. July 11, 1944, No. 13283. [Class 138 (i)] A machine for washing and drying bulbs of cathode-ray tubes, bottles, &c. is constructed so that the bulbs are finally treated with hot water which is drained and then the bulbs are dried by means of a current of air or other gas which is blown into the interior of the bulb. The bulbs 2 are mounted in cages 1 carried by a rotating horizontal shaft 4, and are held to the cages by clips or by a retaining ring 7 while the bulbs are carried through boiling water in a vessel 8 heated by an electric immersion heater 9. A current of air is blown through tubes 3 which project into the bulbs as these leave the vessel 8 so that the bulbs are dried as they drain by removal of steam trapped in them, and it is stated that staining is avoided. In a modification, the bulbs may be carried by cages on an endless band with tubes projecting into the interiors by means of which jets of air may be blown into the interiors of the bulbs after these have been heated by admission of hot water and the water has been allowed to drain away. The bulbs may be cleaned automatically prior to the treatment set out above.
