Abstract

Natural rubber including guttapercha, and synthetic rubbers are cured by a process which comprises heating them with a quinone dioxime ester of an aromatic or substituted aromatic acid in the presence of an oxidizing agent. The preferred esters are paraquinone dioxime-benzoate, -m-nitrobenzoate, -di (m-nitrobenzoate), -p-chlorobenzoate and -di (p-chlorobenzoate), though any of the esters of quinone dioxime, thymoquinone dioxime, naphthoquinone dioxime and anthraquinone dioxime with alkyl benzoic acids, mono or poly nitrobenzoic acids, mono or poly chlorbenzoic acids, hydroxybenzoic acids and thiosalicylic acids may also be employed. Preferably from 0.2 to 10 parts by weight of the ester to 100 parts of the rubber is used together with up to 25 parts of the oxidizing agent which may be lead peroxide or red lead. The synthetic rubber may be polybutadiene, polychloroprene, an interpolymer of butadiene with acrylonitrile or styrene, or a low temperature interpolymer of an iso-olefin with a diolefin such as that described in Specification 523,248, [Group IV]. The curing agents are preferably added to the rubber while it is in the solid state or in solution in benzene or paraffin naphtha; curing being preferably effected at 75 DEG to 175 DEG C. for a period of 5 to 60 minutes. Examples are given illustrating the superiority as regards freedom from scorch of aromatic quinone dioxime esters over paraquinone dioxime when these compounds are added separately to similar mixes containing different rubbers and substances chosen from lead peroxide, red lead, sulphur, zinc oxide, stearic acid, carbon black and softening oil. Clay and pigments may also be added. Specification 475,034 also is referred to.
