Abstract

Vulcanized synthetic rubber-like materials of the type produced by the polymerization of butadiene, its homologues or substituted derivatives, either alone or together with styrene or acrylonitrile, are plasticised by being mechanically disintegrated, treated with a mixture of a softening agent, a plasticiser having a mercapto grouping and an organic acid of the aromatic group and then converted to a coherent sheet by mechanical working between rolls. The synthetic rubber is first reduced sufficiently to pass a 20 mesh per inch sieve by passing through grinding rolls having a high friction ratio (e.g. 5 : 1) and is then added to a warm mixture consisting of 2-20 per cent of a softener such as pine tar, pine oil, a coumarone resin, naphthenic acid or a salt thereof such as zinc or iron naphthenate, 1/2 -5 per cent of an organic acid of the aromatic group such as salicylic acid, benzoic acid, o-, m- or p-nitrobenzoic acids, a dinitrobenzoic acid or a halogen substituted benzoic acid, with the addition of 1/4 -2 per cent of a plasticising agent containing the mercapto group such as mercaptobenzthiazole or a - or b -naphthyl mercaptan, and thoroughly stirring till a uniform mix is obtained. The mixture is then allowed to stand for 2-3 days at ordinary temperatures or for a shorter time at an elevated temperature and is then milled between rolls having a friction ratio of 1.2-3 : 1 till a coherent sheet is formed, the rolls being kept below 60 DEG C. at this stage by water cooling if necessary. The temperature is then raised to 90-100 DEG C. for a short period in order further to increase the plasticity. In a typical mix, 100 parts of synthetic rubber tyre tread crumb are added to a mixture of 10 parts coumarone resin, 3 parts benzoic acid and 1 part of mercaptobenzthiazole. The treated product may be used alone or with the addition of natural or synthetic rubber. Specification 558,334 is referred to. According to the Provisional Specification, the plasticiser may be omitted. Specification 564,514 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
