Abstract

Vulcanized synthetic rubber-like material of the type produced by the co-polymerization of butadiene with other polymerizable substances such as styrene is reclaimed by heating the comminuted material to a temperature of at least 160 DEG C. while continually exposing fresh surfaces of the material in the presence of oxygen. In a preferred embodiment, a vulcanized tyre tread composition containing GR-S synthetic rubber to which may be added a proportion of vulcanized natural rubber is ground to pass a 10 mesh per inch sieve. The crumb is then rapidly heated to 160-200 DEG C. in a rotating horizontal cylindrical drum having centrally situated apertures in each end through which air and oxygen are fed; after 10-15 minutes the reclaimed material is rapidly cooled and sheeted on water cooled rolls. Softeners such as the coumarone resins particularly the softer types, petroleum residues and pine-tar may be added during the process.
