Abstract

Vulcanized synthetic rubber, such as butadiene polymers alone or together with styrene or acrylonitrile, is reclaimed by comminuting, e.g. to fine crumb by grinding rollers of 5 to 1 friction ratio, mechanically working between rollers, e.g. of friction ratio 1.75 to 1 at a temperature below 60 DEG C. until the particles cohere to form a sheet which is thereupon worked between rollers at a temperature between 60 and 120 DEG C., e.g. with a friction ratio 1.2 to 1. A softener, e.g. up to 10 per cent of pine oil, pine tar or coumarone resin may be incorporated before, during, or after mechanical working. The product may be used for re-treading tyres.
