Abstract

1,128,212. Polymer compositions. DUNLOP CO. Ltd. 17 May, 1966 [28 May, 1965], No. 22688/65. Headings C3P and C3Q. Polymer compositions are made by a method which comprises mixing one or more compounding ingredients with an organic solvent for the polymer and/or with water to form a dispersion, adding to the dispersion a polymer in the dry state and an organic solvent for the polymer if not present in the dispersion and mixing the dispersion with the polymer until the polymer has dissolved in the organic solvent. The polymer may be natural rubber, cis-polybutadiene, cis -polyisoprene, trans -polyisoprene, butadiene/styrene copolymer, isoprene/isobutylene copolymer or copolymer of ethylene and propylene with or without a polyene. Specified compounding ingredients are carbon black, rubber crumb, whiting, vulcanizing agents and antioxidants. The solvent may be hexane, benzene, toluene, chloroform or carbon tetrachloride. Mixing and dissolution may be effected under conditions of high shear, if desired at elevated temperatures, and extender oils and processing oils may be added to assist dissolution of the polymer. The compositions of the invention may be used as coatings or adhesives for fabrics, textile or metal cords, and metal and wood surfaces, or may be foamed. In examples compositions are prepared by (I) dispersing carbon black, sulphur, zinc oxide, N-cyclohexyl-2-benzthiazyl sulphenamide, stearic acid, N-phenyl-N<SP>1</SP>-isopropyl p-phenylenediamine, 1,2-dihydro-2,2,4-trimethyl-6-ethoxy quinoline and mineral oil in hexane and adding a butadiene/styrene rubber; (II) dispersing carbon black, sulphur, zinc oxide, N-cyclohexyl-2-benzthiazyl sulphenamide, stearic acid and N-phenyl-N<SP>1</SP>-isopropyl p-phenylenediamine in water and adding a butadiene/styrene copolymer and a hexane solution of antioxidant and mineral oil; (III) dispersing pelletized carbon black in toluene and adding a butadiene/ styrene rubber; and (IV) dispersing the compounding ingredients of Example I in toluene and adding a butadiene/styrene rubber.
