Abstract

Microporous rubber-like materials having intercommunicating pores, particularly for use in the manufacture of printing webs, are obtained by mixing rubber or a vulcanizable rubber-like material with a non-resilient soluble filler, both very finely comminuted, moulding the mixture under pressure, vulcanizing the product either before or after removal from the mould and then removing the filler by means of a solvent inert to the rubber-like material. The components are preferably ground to a size to pass a 25 mesh to the linear inch sieve and be retained on a 325 sieve, and may be mixed in the proportion of 55 per cent. by volume of rubber or rubber-like material such as a butadiene copolymer, to 45 per cent. by volume of filler, this being as fine or finer than the rubber. The filler, which may be sodium nitrate, sodium carbonate, ammonium sulphate, zinc or polyvinyl alcohol, is dissolved out by means of hydrochloric or nitric acid or by hot water which may contain a soap, a sulphonated fatty alcohol or a dioctyl ester of sodium sulphosuccinic acid.
