Abstract

583,144. Garment-pressing machines. ARMSTRONG & CO., Ltd., J., and NEWBERY, S. Oct. 2, 1944, No. 18791. [Class 138 (ii)] In a garment or like press a main pedestal 1 carries a work table 2 having a pedestal 3 with arms 15, 16 supporting fixed bucks 4, 5 of circular arcuate form around a central axis 17 round which swings a standard 6 to which is pivoted at 19 a bent lever 7 carrying the press head 8 and at the lower end operated by a power cylinder 9. A stud 20 on .the piston engages a boss 21 on the lever arm pressing it against a spring 22 seated against a cross member 23 housed in the channel section standard 6 which is formed, for example, of plate or sheet steel of one or more rolled sections welded together. The pedestals and base plate 12 are of welded pressed steel sheets, and the work table may also be the same or a casting and is formed at the back with an upstanding wall 13, and in front with a depending flange or curtain 14 on which the manual controls 27, 28, 29, 30 are arranged, conveniently 27 common to both directions of movement of the press head incorporating both supply and release valves for the power fluid, a central release valve 30 to operate the release valve incorporated in the manual 27 without opening the fluid supply valve incorporated therein. The control valves and piping are of known type, and are such that with the standard in one position of rest and the press closed, the operation of the common manual 27 and the appropriate one of the other 28 or 29 will open the press and admit power fluid to the respective cylinder 10, 11 to move the standard to the other position of rest and then to the cylinder 9 to close the press. Compressed air is the preferred motive fluid and the controls and distributing valve are such that the final movement of the standard 6 opens a valve to operate the closing cylinder 9, or the latter may receive its supply from the respective standard operating cylinder 10, 11 when the piston therein uncovers a port on the cylinder wall. The exhaust of the cylinders 10, 11 may be arranged so that that from the inoperative cylinder will, after a predetermined movement of the standard, be restricted so that it acts as a dash-pot to check the final movement of the standard. The live steam drainage and other piping is housed in the hollow pedestals and buck 'supports for the bucks, and for the press head in the swinging standard. The press head is carried, in well-known manner, on the lever 7 by a universal mounting to even the pressure. The surface of the buck is substantially straight from back to front of the machine and normal to the plane of swing of the standard, which may be vertical or slightly inclined so as to make the surface of the buck incline downwardly from back to front. The bucks may be mounted on support portions adapted for bolting to the pedestal and the opposed faces of the pedestals and support portions would be ported so that the steam and other piping ducts would be in register. If desired a steel back sheet may be arranged behind the swinging standard so as largely to enclose it.
