[Class 138 (ii)] Means is provided for protecting the collar portion of a partially finished shirt while damping the front portion before ironing. As applied to a turret press a hood 18, closed at sides and top, is pivoted at 23 to a bracket 22 fixed to the machine and normally held up by a pair of springs 24. A fluid-pressure actuated ram 25 has the fixed member attached to the bracket 22 and the movable member to the hood and is connected by a pipe 28 to a normally closed valve 27 with an exhaust port 29 and pressure supply pipe 26. The operator arranges a shirt on the board 11 of the machine in the dressing position where the board is tilted at about 45‹. draping the collar about the block 19 and securing it by a clamp 20. The front and tails of the shirt are draped downwardly on the board, and secured by a clamp 21. The spray gun is then lifted from its supporting pin 34a on a rack 32 pivoted at 32b which is then raised by a spring 33 to raise a lever 31 to engage the stem 30 and open the valve 27 admitting air to the part 25 which thereupon lowers the hood 18 to cover the collar 19 before the operator can manipulate gun to position and spray the shirt front. To prevent actual delivery of liquid from the spray gun except when the hood is fully lowered to protecting position, a tongue 38 at the rear of the hood is provided to open in that position a valve 39a and admit air to a diaphragm 42 which opens a valve 43 to admit water from a supply pipe 44 to the flexible feed pipe 35 of the spray gun. Water falling on the hood 18 is guided by bearings 18b to a lip 18a so as fall into a trough 22a for delivery by a pipe 37 to the heated steam chest 12 where it is evaporated. When the shirt is thus prepared, the operator depresses a pivot to swing the board round and bring it horizontal under the press head 12, the finished shirt coming into the tilted position for removal, the tilting being effeced by a ram 17, Fig. 3.
