Abstract
582,886. Velocity-modulated tubes. M-O VALVE CO., Ltd., and SLOANE, R. W. July 25, 1941, No. 9479. [Class 39 (i)] An electric frequency changer using a velocity modulator as a mixer, comprises a resonator 3 having a natural frequency f2 through which electrons pass from cathode 2 and a perforated electrode 6 reflects back part of the electron stream into resonator 3 to maintain it in a state of oscillation without the necessity for any external oscillating circuit. The remainder of the stream passes through a resonator 4 which oscillates with a frequency f1 under the influence of a loop 7 which feeds into the apparatus an outside signal of this frequency. The stream then strikes target electrode 8 from which an output frequency of mf1Œnf2 can be taken. The reflecting action of electrode 6 may include the emission of secondary electrons under primary bombardment as well as the return of primary electrons by the potential of the electrode.
