582,654. Casting composite articles. CHLORIDE ELECTRICAL STORAGE CO., Ltd. (Galloway, C. D.). Dec. 27, 1944, No. 25922. [Class 83 (i)] An electric accumulator has the strap connecting the lugs of the assembled positive or negative plates tightly gripping the sides of said lugs and antogenously welded only at the tips or ends thereof. This is effected by casting the'metal to form the straps at a low temperature and then applying heat adjacent the lug-ends. Moulds.-The plates 13, 14 are assembled with interposed separators 15 and located in an inverted position with the lugs 16, 17 projecting downwardly into mould cavities 11, 12 and the separators engaging a heat resisting and insulating plate 18. Lead-antimony alloy at such a temperature that it will not cause crystallization of the lugs is then poured into gates 23, 24 and into the cavities 11, 12. When the cast metal is almost or quite solid, high frequency current is passed through coils 32 to heat inserts 27, 28 arranged in the mould adjacent or in contact with the lugs 16, 17. As soon as the ends of the lugs begin to melt, the current is cut off and cooling water is circulated through ducts 33. The gates 23, 24 may be cut off after extraction or separate gate blocks 25, 26 may be withdrawn first, the projecting gates be cut off, and then the casting be extracted by ejectors 21.
