Abstract
582,619. Fuel injectors. VICKERS-ARMSTRONGS, Ltd., and DAVIES, E. March 10, 1942, No. 3167. [Class 7 (iii)] The injection valve 3 with conical seating 4 and spraying nozzle 2, is of the kind having a cylindrical extension 6 operating in a larger cylindrical bore 7, so that when the valve is partly opened for the primary injection, an annular space 8 is formed through which the fuel has to pass, the arrangement being such that the extension 6 will always remain within the bore 7 during primary injection, whatever variations may occur in temperature, or in the wear of the valve gear, so that the amount of fuel injected remains the same. When the valve is fully opened for the main injection, the extension 6 is withdrawn from the bore 7. The valve is actuated by a cam or cams lifting the valve off its seat during primary injection, closing the valve, and lifting it to a greater extent during main injection; a single cam with two lifting surfaces may be employed. The quantity of fuel is controlled by varying the pressure of the fuel caused by one or more pumps supplying the valve through a high-pressure storage line or reservoir. The primary injection may be suppressed at low powers by sliding the primary cam out of action, or by increasing the clearance between the cam and push rod.
