Abstract

720,011. Fuel injection systems. KYLE, D. W. E. (Kockums Mekaniska Verkstads Aktiebolag). March 13, 1952 [March 13, 1951; Aug. 24, 1951] Nos. 6034/51 and 19998/51. Classes 7 (3) and 7 (6). [Also in Group XXVIII] The opening movement of a spring-loaded fuel-pressure actuated injection valve is controlled by a dashpot which is charged with fluid through the same passage or passages by which the fluid escapes from the dashpot cylinder to give the dashpot effect, the moving part of the dashpot merely abutting the needle valve, or a part through which the spring loading acts on the needle valve, so that the valve can close promptly irrespective of the rate of filling of the dashpot. In Fig. 1 the dashpot, comprising a cylinder 10 and spring-loaded piston 16 abutting the end of the spring- loaded valve stem 14, has fluid escape orifices 17, 24 leading to a space 18 filled with fuel leaking past the valve stem. Rotation of a screwed plug 22 fitting tightly in the end of the cylinder 10 adjusts the size of the orifice 24 formed therein and hence adjusts the dashpot action. The valve 15 lifts slowly due to the dashpot but is closed quickly by the spring 13 due to the one-way connection of the stem 14 with the piston 16. Rotation of the dashpot cylinder is prevented by a screw engaging a keyway 19 therein. In a modification, Fig 2, the dashpot piston 30, in contact with the valve stem slides in a cylinder 34, the dashpot fluid escaping through a fixed orifice 48, Fig. 3, and an orifice 47 adjusted by a spring-loaded sliding sleeve 38, the position of which is controlled by a screw 49 acting through an intermediate rod 50. The injection fuel is supplied by a pump comprising a spring-loaded plunger 54 actuated by a piston 53 subjected to the pressure in the engine cylinder, the fuel being supplied to the pump by a hydraulic accumulator. The dashpot adjustment means 22, Fig. 1, or 49, Fig. 2, may be interconnected with the fuel control means.
