Abstract

582,618. Thermionic valves. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and MADDOCK, A. J. July 26, 1941, No. 9519. [Class 39 (i)] To reduce hum in a thermionic valve having a cathode heated by alternating current, the wires of the filament (or filamentary heater in an indirectly heated cathode) are arranged parallel or substantially parallel to the wires of the grid or grids. It is shown that the deflection of the electrons by the alternating magnetic field of the heating current takes place between the grid wires rather than across them, so that the grids do not collect hum components. Both control and screen grids may be parallel to the cathode, which may comprise four filaments F, Fig. 6, each between two grid wires G, and all parallel to the axis of cylindrical anode P. In Fig. 9, the filament F is a rectangular zig-zag, and the grid G is formed from parallel wires stretched between insulating plates Q, R ; a similar arrangement with a double hairpin filament substantially inclined to the grid wires is stated to be known. In a further modification, the filament and grid may both be coaxial helices, but this is disclaimed for indirectly heated cathodes. The wires may be replaced by strips or tapes and either across or parallel to the electron stream. Specification 301,514, [Class 39 (i)], is referred to.
