Abstract

582,335. Control systems for resistance welding. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., CHADWICK, G., and SALTHOUSE, J. E. Jan. 19, 1944, No. 1027. [Class 38 (iv)] Overlapping or succeeding impulses are supplied to the primary winding of a welding transformer by the successive discharge of two or more condensers. The discharges may be in alternate directions to eliminate residual magnetism. The interval between the initiations of the impulses may be controlled by an adjustable timing device whereby the impulses may overlap and the duration of energy supply to the weld may be varied. The current impulses may be derived from condensers 1, 3 charged from a supply 2, 4, for example through gridcontrolled mercury vapour valves as in Specification 580,854, and discharged through mercury valves 7, 8 in opposite directions through separate windings of a transformer 9. The charging of the two condensers may be initiated by switch contacts 5, 6 which also effect the discharge.. A timing device 10 which may be of the static electronic type may be adjusted to permit the discharge from condenser 3 to overlap-that from condenser 1.
