Abstract

582,213. Variable-speed gearing. KEARNEY & TRECKER CORPORATION. April 25, 1944, No. 7693. Convention date, May 12, 1943. [Class 80 (ii)] In variable-speed gearing having a pair of belt-connected expanding pulleys each pulley may be locked in a predetermined position while the other is adjusted throughout its range of variable diameter. As shown, applied to the drive of a milling machine, a driving pulley 23 driven by a motor 20 which is slidable on its frame 16 is connected by a belt 22 to a pulley 24 on the cutter spindle 17. The pulley checks 25, 26 which are urged towards one another by a spring 57, have slidable sleeve hubs 27, 28 connected by a link 37 to equalize the expanding movement between the two parts. The link 37 is pivoted at 34 to the spindle 17, passes through slots in the hubs 27, 28 and has pins 42, 46, engaging the side walls of slots in the hubs. The hub 28 has a cap 58 with a bayonet notch 67 engaged by a pin 61 in a sleeve 62 on the pulley half 25. When the checks 25, 27 are nearest one another the caps 58 can be turned to lock them together. Both driving and driven pulleys are of similar construction. In operation, the pulley 24 is locked in its greatest diameter position the pulley 23 being unlocked at its smallest diameter. The pulley 23 and motor 20 are then in the extreme right hand position, Fig. 1. Movement of the motor 20 to the left by rotation of a screwed spindle 72 causes the pulley 23 to gradually increase its diameter until the maximum diameter is reached and the gearing is then at a one-to-one ratio. The pulley 23 is then locked and the pulley 24 unlocked whereupon the motor is moved to the right so that pulley 24 gradually decreases its diameter. The speed of the driven shaft is indicated by a double scale 74 on the motor casing and fixed pointer 75. In a modified type of pulley the spring 57 is replaced by a spring acting both in compression and torsion.
