Abstract

1,213,481. Expanding-wheel gear. FLEXTOL Ltd. 8 Feb., 1968 [8 Feb., 1967], No. 6948/67. Heading F2D. In a variable speed drive in which a V-belt 13 transmits motion between a pair of pulleys comprising pairs of frusto-conical plates 10, 11 and 33, 34 respectively movable axially relatively to each other, plate 34 is moved by a thrust member 38 engaged by a thread 25 on a shaft 14 rotatable coaxially with the pulley axis means being provided for pre-setting the position of the thrust member with respect to the plate so that the speed ratio corresponds to that indicated on a hand wheel 16 for rotating the shaft. As shown, plates 33, 34 form a driven pulley and are rotatable on an extension 26 on one end of the shaft 14. The other end is journalled in the housing 1 and carries the hand wheel 16 which is lockable by a lever 19. A stud 40 prevents rotation of the thrust member and also serves as the pre-setting means by engaging selected holes 43, 41 in the housing and thrust member. Two sets of angularly-spaced holes 43, 41 may be provided, one set having a different hole-spacing from the other. Plates 10, 11 are keyed to the drive shaft of motor 3 and are urged together by a spring 12. In another embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), plates 33, 34 form the drive pulley and are keyed and splined respectively to the drive shaft 4. The shaft 14 has an extension surrounding the end of shaft 4 and externally threaded for engagement with the thrust member 38.
