Abstract

A composition for protecting metal surfaces against corrosion comprises lanolin and a cellulose ether in which the weight ratio of lanolin to cellulose ether is greater than 1. Ethyl cellulose having an ethoxy content of 43.5 to 49.5 per cent. is the preferred ether but other cellulose ethers such as butyl or benzyl cellulose may be used. Refined anhydrous lanolin, anhydrous wool grease or the lanolin acids and lanolin alcohols obtainable from lanolin by saponification may be employed. The constituents are applied to the metal to be coated in a solvent such as benzene, toluene, xylene or a chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon or a mixture thereof. In an example 1 part of ethyl cellulose of ethoxy content 48.5 to 49.5 per cent. is dissolved in xylene and 9 parts of anhydrous lanolin are added with stirring until solution is complete. The solution may then be applied to metal surfaces by spraying, dipping or brushing and the solvent removed by evaporation at room temperature. The protective coating is readily removed from the coated surface by rubbing with a dry cloth or by washing with a solvent in which the constituents are soluble.ALSO:A composition for protecting metal surfaces against corrosion comprises lanolin and a cellulose ether in which the weight ratio of lanolin to cellulose ether is greater than 1. The constituents are applied to the metal to be coated in a solvent such as benzene, toluene, xylene, or a chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon or a mixture thereof. In an example, 1 part of ethyl cellulose of ethoxy content 48.5 to 49 per cent is dissolved in xylene and 9 parts of anhydrous lanolin are added with stirring until solution is complete. The solution may then be applied to metal surfaces by spraying, dipping or brushing and the solvent removed by evaporation at room temperature. The protective coating is p readily removed from the coated surface by rubbing with a dry cloth or by washing with a solvent in which the constituents are soluble.
