Abstract

A protective coating composition consists of an aqueous solution or emulsion comprising by weight up to 10% of a polyacrylic or polyvinyl compound, up to 45% of a natural or synthetic wax and up to 4% of a wetting agent which is an organic amine or a polyoxyalkylene compound. The polyacrylic compound may be polyacrylamide, and the polyvinyl compound may be polyvinyl acetate, if desired copolymerized with a carbonyl-containing monomer. Specified waxes are carnauba wax and montan wax. Specified wetting agents are polyoxyethylene alkyl aryl ethers and triethanolamine.ALSO:An aqueous solution or emulsion comprises by weight up to 10% of a polyacrylic or polyvinyl compound, up to 45% of a natural or synthetic wax and up to 4% of a wetting agent which is an organic amine or a polyoxyalkylene compound. The polyacrylic compound may be polyacrylamide, and the polyvinyl compound may be polyvinyl acetate, or a copolymer of vinyl acetate with a carboxyl-containing monomer. Specified waxes are carnauba wax and montan wax. Specified wetting aegnts are polyoxyethylene alkyl aryl ethers and triethanolamine.ALSO:Clean surfaces, such as the cleaned, painted surfaces of aircraft, land vehicles or light alloy panels, may be protected against dirt and injurious constituents of the atmosphere by applying an uninterrupted coat or film of an aqueous solution or suspension of a water-dilutable, acid-resistant, alkali-miscible compound and allowing the film to form a bright solid layer by evaporation. The film, together with adherent dirt &c may be removed by washing with a mild alkali such as dilute aqueous ammonia. The specified aqueous composition comprises up to 10% (e.g. 0.5%) of a polyacrylic or polyvinyl compound up to 45% (e.g. 10%) of a natural or synthetic wax and up to 4% (e.g. 2%) of a wetting agent which is either an organic amine or a polyalkylene compound. The polyacrylic compound may be polyacrylamide, the polyvinyl compound may be polyvinyl acetate, if desired copolymerized with a carbonyl-containing monomer. Specified waxes are carnauba and montan waxes. Specified wetting agents are polyoxyethylene alkyl aryl ethers and triethanolamine. In the example, a mixture of the specified waxes is melted, wetting agent added, some of the water added followed by an acrylic polymer solution and the rest of the water. The compositions may be applied by spraying, pouring, brushing or dipping.
